I just had a thought earlier.
One of the problems for the chat room is that there's often no-one there. Naturally I'm not going to stay watching my phone and waiting, so I'll usually pull up another page and do something else and check back.
The problem is, when I do that, I seem to be logged out of the room pretty promptly, even if the tab is still open. So if anyone else comes in, they'll see it's empty and leave.
Would it be possible to stop the chat room connection from timing out quite so quickly? 10 minutes is probably too long; but less than 2 minutes is too short. With a bit more "stickiness" on the chat room, we might be able to get it going a bit better.

For info - If I go into chat and stay in the original window then I get logged off fairly quickly if I navigate away.
If I go into chat but then use the ‘open chat in a new window’ function then it seems to leave me in a lot longer if I navigate away.

Thanks WM. Yeah, I just found that mode, but I didn't check if it changed this. Worth knowing!
